Tonight I stumbled upon this crochet pattern from 1939 for a sweet little topper. If I could crochet with confidence I would have started it, but this would be great if you wanted to crochet a hat, gloves, collar, cuffs, and bag, all to match!

Last weekend I scored three great vintage hats all from various places. The first is a darling 30s topper that I'll have to save for spring, the second a little 50s cap with velvet and flowers, and third my first ever Christian Dior, and of course it had to be a hat ;) It'll go great with my Janzen bathing suit next summer!

A good cloche can be so hard to find (I've been searching for years with little results), but today I stumbled upon Hats by Behida with each hat more appealing than the other. The structure and draping of the cloches rival the real thing, and best of all they are one of a kind!

Usually I stay away from 60s hats, just because they are so unflattering on me. I saw this one from Cheap Vintage on Etsy and think it's about the happiest thing ever. I doubt it's a hat, probably more like a hood, maybe to keep your hair from being messed up in windy weather. Either way it's adorable.

Lili Dache 30s spring hat

One day I will own a fabulous Lili Dache hat, meanwhile this one from Vintage Textile is quite an inspiration if you want to spruce up a plain hat with an unusual mix of silk flowers and bright bursts of feathers. The Vintage Textile website is amazing if you haven't yet discovered it, with clothing dating hundreds of years back. The person who runs it does a fantastic job of incorporating interesting facts revolving around the items, and with this listing I learned that Lili Dache designed Carmen Mirandas fruity turban!

Once when asked if I collect hats, I replied "No, I wear them."

Many people collect hats. They buy beautiful vintage creations, sit them on a shelf, and look at them every once in a while. These people like to covet pretty things. As do I. But there is one key difference between just hat collectors and me: I put my collection to good use. I wear a hat every day, and while this is unusual in todays world, I do it because I want to, and because something so beautiful should be seen, as it was made to do. I have had collectors want to buy hats right off my head. When asked what they do with their hats, they say "Well, I collect them." How sad.
Hats are not just for church, or tea, or costume. They are for going to the grocery store. And visiting a friend. And going out thrifting for more hats. Hats are also inexpensive, because there is no demand for them. So much style impact for so little.
This little place will be for those rare women who do not leave the house without a hat, and for those who want to wear hats, but don't know where to start. Hopefully this will inspire and encourage you to proudly wear something so flattering, no matter your dress size, your age, what you do for a living, or what time period you are stuck in.
